Mock Trial Program

The CT Middle School Mock Trial Program is an exciting law-related education program, sponsored by Civics First; Advancing Democracy and Law Education in Connecticut, which introduces students to the American Legal system and provides a challenging opportunity for personal growth and achievement. As part of the Mock trial program, students are challenged to demonstrate their critical thinking and teamwork skills, as well as basic skills learned in the classroom. OLM students in the 8th grade are involved in one of the following roles: witness, attorney, bailiff, researcher, or court reporter.

Objectives:
Through participation in mock trial, students gain practical understanding of the way in which the American legal system functions. While learning the details of trial process and procedure, students also develop important lifetime skills: critical analysis of problems, reasoning, listening, oral presentation and extemporaneous argument. Mock trial provides an active learning opportunity for students and requires a high level of cooperation among participants.

Our Lady of Mercy School Mock Trial team is led each year by Mrs. Nancy Addorisio, OLM 8th grade teacher. Students also receive expert guidance and coaching from volunteer attorneys and drama teachers. Each of these instructors work with the students over the course of 3 or 4 months allowing them to be best prepared for all facets of the competition.

Our Lady of Mercy School has particpated for the past 10 years in the CT Middle School Mock Trial Competition which conissits of competing teams from public, private and parochial schools. Each year OLM teams are strong, well prepared and demonstrate high levels of understanding of the case and the subsequent laws that apply.
